This Tuesday we’re having one of our legendary Swarovski sales! Swarovski crystals are the perfect solution to any DIY that needs some dazzle. If you’re new to the world of Swarovski, you may be overwhelmed by all of the options. Here are a few tips for Swarovski novices so that they can take advantage of our sale! Knowledge is power, people.
When it comes to color, Swarovski makes almost every color under the sun. There are even some varieties which reflect multiple colors. For example, one of our most popular colors, Crystal, also comes in Crystal AB, which stands for Aurora Borealis. The Crystal AB initially looks clear, but reflects different colors from different angles. This rainbow effect is created by adding metallic chemical coatings to the glass.
Swarovski crystals come in all different shapes and sizes, but they are measured in SS. If you’re having trouble figuring out what size you need, check out our handy Rhinestone Size Chart!
Another variable to consider when picking out rhinestones is how to affix them! There are generally two types of rhinestones you can buy: flatback and hotfix. Flatback rhinestones have to either be glued by hand, or used with a brisk-set. The brisk-set uses tiny metal backings that pierce through fabric and hold the rhinestone in place. Hotfix rhinestones have glue on the back of them which attaches to fabric when heated.
We hope you’ve learned a thing or two about these gorgeous DIY elements. Now that you’re in the know, head on over to mjtrim.com and pick out some beautiful rhinestones! Have any other rhinestone-related inquiries? Leave your questions below!
Our 2 Day Online Rhinestone Sale is back!

We’ve been eyeing the Lucite bags on the runway in Valentino’s and Marc Jacobs’s 2013 collection and have been wanting to try our hand at a DIY influenced by this trend. We spiced up our pink lucite bag with swarovski flatback rhinestones and couldn’t wait to show off this easy and affordable DIY.
Forever 21 Pink Lucite Bag
Brisk-Set Rhinestone Setter
SS48 Tiffany Settings-Nickel Regular Legs
Swarovski Flatback Rhinestones- Crystal AB SS48
Place your Swarovski Flatback Rhinestones- Crystal AB SS48 face down in the Brisk-Set Rhinestone Setter. The pointed side of the stone will be faced down revealing the silver back.
Hold your bag in a way that allows you to put the Brisk-Set Rhinestone Setter inside. Place a SS48 Tiffany Setting with the prongs facing down over your plastic bag. Make sure the SS48 Tiffany Setting matches the hole in the Brisk-Set Rhinestone Setter .
Press down on your Brisk-Set Rhinestone Setter for the rhinestone to set.
For harder to reach areas you may want to manually place each of the crystals into place. The first thing you’ll want to do is push your Tiffany Settings through the bag from the interior side.
Once the settings are locked into place, place your crystal in the backing. It may help to angle your bag in a way that allows the stone to comfortably sit into place.
In order to secure the crystal fold the metal legs so they appear to be clasping the crystal. Add as many crystals as you desire in order to achieve the perfect bag.

Have you ever wondered what is the difference between Flatback rhinestones and Hotfix rhinestones; as well as which one would work best for you? If you have, then hopefully today’s post can help answer your questions.
M&J Trimming supplies both Swarovski Flatback rhinestones and Swarovski Hotfix rhinestones. Both are quite popular and which one would work best for your project, really depends on what you will be using them for. So let’s get started.
Flatback rhinestones have two sides. One side is the multi-faceted side; which is the side where you see the shimmering crystal. The other side is gray in color, flat and smooth in texture. Flatback rhinestones can be applied onto your project using glue such as Gem-tac, E-6000, or even Magna-tac. You will need to place the glue into a syringe to insure that you don’t use too much glue when applying the Flatback rhinestones. And since the rhinestones are too small to pick up by hand, you’ll have to use tweezers to pick them up one by one and place them on top of the area that you had applied glue to. Flatback rhinestones can be used for arts and crafts or any material that you don’t mind if the Flatback rhinestones become loose.
If you want something more permanent, then you’ll have to use the Hotfix rhinestones. Hotfix rhinestones also have a multi-faceted side and back side that is gray in color, but when you look closely, there’s already dry glue added to the gray flat surface. Hotfix rhinestones are added onto your fabric by using heat from a hot-fixer rhinestone setter. Since there’s already glue on the Hotfix rhinestones, all you need to do is apply heat. You have to be careful when using Hotfix rhinestones because once applied, it’s permanent and will not come off your material. Hotfix rhinestones are also less messy as you don’t have to apply glue yourself.
Here’s a big difference between hotfix and flatback rhinestones. Hotfix rhinestones are only recommended for fabric. It is not recommended for leather, rubber, paper or plastic. The hot-fixer rhinestones setter that is used to help apply the stones is extremely hot and can possibly burn any material that is not fabric. By the way, yes, it is okay to use hotfix rhinestones on tulle.
So there you have it; the difference between Flatback rhinestones and Hotfix rhinestones.
