1

Working at a store like M&J Trimming it’s hard not to become completely overcome with creativity! This place is really a DIYer’s dream. That’s why when Carlos saw this amazing green and red canvas ribbon, he knew exactly what to make with it: a Gucci-inspired belt! Learn how to make this stylish belt with just a few items, and in only a few minutes!

Gucci Inspired Belt DIY Materials | M&J Trimming

What You’ll Need:
2 2.5″ Bamboo Rings

35MM Polyester Webbing

A Striped Grosgrain ribbon or Jacquard ribbon for a vintage touch. You can order this style (55160) by giving us a call!

Gucci Inspired Belt DIY Measuring | M&J Trimming1. For this project we’re using printed ribbon, and lining it with webbing to make it sturdier. The webbing can also be used by itself for a fun solid belt. Line up the webbing and ribbon, and measure how much ribbon you will need by wrapping it around your hips and adding six inches.

Gucci Inspired Belt DIY Gluing | M&J Trimming2. Once you’ve cut the ribbon and webbing to your desired length, glue them together using a hot glue gun or E-6000. If you’re using a glue gun, work in sections. This way the glue won’t dry before you’ve reached the end of the ribbon!

Gucci Inspired Belt DIY Bamboo Rings | M&J Trimming3. Take the two bamboo rings, and loop the belt through them. Glue the end of the belt down past the rings. There should be a little bit of wiggle room between the two rings.

Gucci Inspired Belt DIY Carlos | M&J TrimmingExtra step: If you want to make a belt loop for your belt, take a piece of that patterned ribbon and glue the two ends to the back of the belt, while making sure to create a loop on the other side. Make sure you can fit your belt through the loop before gluing it down!

What did you think of Carlos’s quick and easy belt tutorial? This belt is a great way to jazz up any outfit!

Our Favorite M&J Costumes

6

At M&J Trimming, Halloween is one of our favorite holidays! Our favorite aspect of this glorious day isn’t the treats, the spooks, or the tricks. It’s the, you guessed it, costumes! We love getting creative using the items we have in the store to make totally customized costumes! Here are a few of our favorites  from over the years!

Halloween | M&J Trimming

This cute gypsy costume is easy to recreate. You just need a skirt with some volume, a scarf to tie around your waist, and some gold coin trim!

Halloween | M&J Trimming

These costumes are positively terrifying. If you see these guys stalking you in the store, we promise that they’re just trying to help you pick out some trim!

Halloween | M&J Trimming

How creative are these troll costumes? The use of Troll Beads takes these costumes to the next level, and we love the color coordination and crazy hair!

Halloween | M&J Trimming

Looks like someone is “taking it easy” in a hippie ensemble. This look is super easy to recreate using our ribbons for the headband!

Halloween | M&J Trimming

This costume was inspired by the classic film and novel, Clockwork Orange. We may be biased, but we think this looks way more stylish than the original!

Halloween | M&J Trimming Halloween | M&J Trimming

These pictures were taken during our Halloween event a few years ago. Guests got to trim, bedazzle and embellish to their heart’s content. Look at that amazing chained corset one guest made!
Halloween | M&J Trimming

There was no absence of cats and dark costumes at this year’s Halloween. Meow!

Halloween | M&J Trimming

Everybody smile and say trick or trims!

A Lesson in Lace

18

At M&J we have a serious love of lace. You might call it an obsession really. We have walls of the stuff at our store! Of course not all lace is the same, and we’re not talking about just patterns either. There are many unique styles of lace from all over the world! Some are made by hand, others are strictly manufactured by machine.  Some are created with using the needle method, others use bobbins. Each method and material used creates a different, but equally beautiful, style. Here are a few of our favorites styles, and a little history behind each!

Alencon Lace

Alençon – One of the most popular types of lace for wedding dresses, Alençon is a French-style lace. It is also one of the most difficult, and thus most expensive, types of lace to make. This style is characterized by floral or leaf motifs on a mesh background. Fun fact: The process of creating this lace by hand has been preserved over the years by Carmelite nuns in Alençon.

Battenburg Lace

Battenburg – Popular in the 1930s and 1940s, Battenburg is a needle lace. You can find it mostly on tablecloths and linens. It is an easy-to-make lace, and much less labor intensive than other embroidered varieties.

Cluny Lace

Cluny – A bobbin-style lace, cluny often features small flowers and loops. This lace is sturdy, and more durable than most. Its name is derived from the Abbey of Cluny in Cluny, France, where it was used by monks.

Schiffli Lace

Schiffli – This is the lace of the new age. Strictly made using modern machines, Schiffli is created by embroidering both the front and the back of a piece of light fabric, usually tulle.

Venise Lace

Venise - This needle lace was once more coveted than jewels. Originating in Venice, Italy, using this lace as an adornment proved you were very wealthy indeed. Thankfully it is now more affordable, and easy to obtain! Its design features no netting, with motifs held together by braids or threads. This makes it perfect for using as a dramatic trim!

These are just SOME of the many styles of lace available at our store. Which look or style do YOU prefer?

Behind the Scenes: Papillon

People know M&J because of our amazingly colorful storefront filled with trims of all shapes and sizes. More and more people know about our subscription DIY box, Project DIY. But there is one area of M&J Trimming that most people aren’t privy to. This section of M&J is a magical place filled with unicorns, pandas, jewelry and accessories, and it’s called Papillon Accessories.

Papillon Accessories is a division of M&J that creates licensed and private label products. What does that mean? Papillon Accessories buys a license to create hats, jewelry, cold weather accessories, and Halloween accessories, featuring some of your favorite characters and brands like Lisa Frank, Hello Kitty, Angry Panda, and Sharknado! Papillon then sells these items to retailers who offer them to customers in their retail locations.

Papillon Accessories is always busy creating lots of amazing goodies just for Halloween, and we wanted to see what kind of items they were working on. We took a little trip to the Papillon Accessories studio to give our readers a behind-the-scenes look at what goes on in this little-known, but very important, part of M&J Trimming.

Just in time for Halloween, Papillon Accessories has created some costumes inspired by one of the most popular (and strangest) sci-fi movies of the last year. That’s right ladies and gents. We’re talking about Sharknado.  You can buy our very own Sharknado Shark Fin Costume Headband and the Sharknado Shark Mask Hood today on Amazon, and get it just in time for Halloween.

Sharndado Hat with Male Model | M&J Trimming Sharndado Hat with Female Model | M&J Trimming Sharknado | M&J Trimming

Right now Papillon Accessories is inspired by the sea, and their designers are creating a ton of adorable “sea punk” pieces! These necklaces will be sold to stores like Claire’s or Hot Topic, where YOU can buy them!

Sea Punk Necklaces | M&J Trimming

We love these pendant necklaces. The keys and cogs make them look a little bit steam punk! It’s very Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea if you ask us.

Sea Inspired Jewelry | M&J Trimming

These pieces are a little more sparkly and refined, like the jewels you would find in a sunken pirate treasure chest! And the teal starfish ring is such a showstopper!

Sea Punk Charm Necklace | M& J Trimming

We love this charm necklace, and what’s that one charm on the middle right? A dinglehopper, right?

Next time you’re at the mall, the Halloween store or doing some online shopping, and you notice your favorite characters or styles on an accessory in your shopping cart, remember that it might have been made by us here at M&J Trimming!

Trimmer Tales: Carlos

2

Aside from our long history as a New York City specialty store and our massive selection of trims, there is something that we at M&J Trimming are proud to be known for: exceptional customer service. In honor of our amazing employees, we would like to introduce a new series of blog posts called Trimmer Tales, which highlights the people who make this company so special. Our first Trimmer Tale will feature Carlos, whose story proves that if you work hard, you will get where you need to be.

Carlos Helping Guest with Trim | M& J Trimming

Carlos started out in maintenance, and was occasionally asked to help out on the floor when the flood of lunchtime customers came in. Noticing his creativity and ease with the guests, the Cohen brothers decided to use his knack for DIY at the monthly crafting seminars. Carlos soon became a hit! Now he’s a seasoned member of the floor who is a celeb-favorite, helping stars like Miss Tina Knowles, Paris Hilton, and Sarah Jessica Parker. He’s even made a head piece for Cher to wear!

He notes that his favorite thing about M&J Trimming is working with the Cohen family. He attributes his success to the tremendous opportunity that they had given him. He also learned a lot about selling by watching Mr. J in action. The fact that the store has such an amazing selection of unique and hard-to-find items makes it easy to sell. “It’s like a candy store,” Carlos says, “We have so much variety!”

Carlos Helping Guest with Swarovski Rhinestones | M& J Trimming

Carlos’s favorite way to DIY? Embellishing. He loves taking plain items and making them into his own. And his number one tip for those who want to get into the DIY game? He says you should make something using not commonly found materials. The more unique your materials, the more it reflects YOUR personal style.
